Jack Delano- May 1941 The setting of the photograph is outdoors. The lighting is medium. It looks like it is around noon or late afternoon. It looks very rural with farmland in the background and it looks like it is a partially cloudy day. There are around 8 people in this picture. The older ones look no older than 40 but I see a young baby and another younger child. Their clothing is very simple, plain, a bit ragged, and they don’t have shoes on. They are African Americans. Some distinguishing features are that none of them are looking at the camera and none of them look happy. What catches my eye is the house they live in and the fact that they are all standing outside because it looks very old and broken down. All of them are barefoot and there are little children running around. I also see a farm in back of their house which must be unusual because most of the farmers didn’t have enough money to pay for the mortgage of their farmland, but even though they look poor, they still have farmland. The only structure in this photograph is the house this family is living in. Their house looks very old and run down and tells you that they are poor. This looks like a very rural area with not many neighbors or any houses around or next to their house. There is a piece of farmland in the background or in the back yard of their house. And the rest of the surroundings are just empty space with grass. The tone of this photograph is that it has a heavy maybe depressing atmosphere. There is definitely a negative tone because just looking at the photograph made me sad. My response to this photograph after I looked at it was that it was a very sad photograph. It made me realize how good our lives are and to appreciate the living conditions we live in as opposed to living during the Great Depression. My other response was sympathy and compassion because if I could have helped these people, I would have. My other reactions were anger because it was cruel to ignore people living in such bad living conditions.
1.) What did you want to show your audience after taking this photograph?
2.) Why did you decide to take the picture from afar and when none of the family members were looking at the camera?

Dorothea Lange- July 1936 The setting of the photograph is outdoors in a farmland. The lighting is medium it looks slightly cloudy around the afternoon. This photograph is set in a rural area because there is a vast field of farmland. The time of day is around the afternoon. There is only one person in this photograph and she looks around her mid-twenties. Her clothing is a simple white dress and a white hat. She is African American. A distinguishing feature is that the hat she is wearing is very tall and weird because I've never seen a hat like that. Something that catches my eye is that it is a woman working in the field and not a man. Most of the times, a man is doing the farmwork. There are no surrounding structures in this photograph or they are too far away to see. The tone of this paragraph is heavy, negative, and dark because she doesn't look like she is enjoying her work. My response to this photograph is pity because she has to do all the farmwork by herself. Also, loneliness because there is no one else around her and she has to work alone. My other reactions were boringness because it must be very boring to be working alone in the fields for hours at a time. I also feel encouragement because she is trying to do what is best for her and her family, if she has one. Also another reaction is admiration because I would not be able to work in the fields for hours if I had been in her position.
1.)Why are you doing all the work by yourself? 2.) How long do you have to work each day?

The setting of this photograph is outdoors in a fairly bright rural roadside. It looks like it is in the afternoon. There are only two people. The lady looks like she is in her mid- thirties or early forties. The man looks like he is in his mid-forties. The woman is wearing a long dark skirt and a white short sleeved shirt. The man is wearing a hat, white short sleeved shirt and black pants. They are both African American. A distinguishing feature is that the woman is traveling on foot carrying a box on her head and a bucket in her hand. Something that catches my eye first is that the man is sitting in a wooden wagon along the roadside. There are no houses or structures in the photograph; there is only a field, trees, wagon, and a dirt road. The tone of this photograph is heavy, negative, and dark because they are poor and look like they need help. My response to this photograph is that both people are poor. The man looks like he is resting along the roadside or fixing a wagon and the woman is traveling on foot without any means of transportation. It is along the countryside and there are no houses nearby. My response to this photograph is that the woman must walk a long distance to her house. Maybe the man is trying to fix the wagon so that he could help the woman.
1.) What is the man doing with the wagon? 2.) What is happening in this picture?

This is a photograph of a sign outside a church in rural Eutaw, Alabama. This sign is outdoors attached to two trees. This picture takes place during the day time. There are no people in this picture. There are many distinguishing features to this picture. The one that catches my eyes the most is the part that says. “Jesus Christ The Light of the World.” I would say this because it is telling people that there is a hope and he will guide you when you need him most. The only thing in the background of this picture is a fence. Besides that there are open fields and some trees. This picture shows a positive manner. It tells you that Jesus will save you. This picture has a light manner. The response I get from this picture is that God is a great being. This is telling the people of Eutaw that you should always worship and love Jesus. The picture also tells you that there is hope for you if you are sad and in need of help, because “Jesus Christ is the Light of the World.” The picture is also telling you that god can comfort you if you need help. The whole picture itself passes over in a very positive manner. 1)Did you take this picture because you have a lot of faith in god, or you want to start to believe in god? 2) Do you believe in what this sign means?

This is a picture of a flight cadet at the Southeastern Airbase Training Center in Selma Alabama. The Cadet is climbing into the cockpit of his fighter plane to start his combat training. This is takes place at about midday. There are two people in the picture, the pilot and the copilot. The two pilots look like they are in there twenties. They are both wearing flight suits. The thing that catches my eye most is the airplane it self. The aircraft of WWII have always intrigued me in many ways. The only thing that is in the picture is the men,and the plane they are climbing into. I would say the tone of the photograph is light, and that it sends off a positive image to what is going on. My response to this photo is that it is a serious and yet it is funny at the same time. I would say this because the pilot in the front is laughing with his head down on the joystick. The pilot in the back looks like he is trying to get the pilot in the front to focus. Finally, the picture shows how you have to work and try hard to accomplish your goals. This picture has many good features. 1)What type of drill are the pilots about to do? 2)(For the photographer) Why did you decide to take this photo from this angle?

This is a picture of your typical tenet farmer family and their house. This family lives in the rural town of Greensboro, Alabama. It is day time in this picture. The family is outside of their house sitting together as a family. There are 8 people in this picture. There is a baby that is about a year old, a little boy who looks about 3, two brothers that look between 7 or 8 years old, an older brother who looks around 15 or 16, a sister that looks 15, and two mothers that look like they are in their late 30’s or early 40’s. The thing that catches my eye in this picture is the little boy that is running around. I would say this because you just always seem to notice little children the most for some reason. There is nothing but their farm around this families house. The area is completely rural, and I would say that this picture shows a positive image. I would say that because the picture shows how families stick together. My response to this photograph is that it is calm and tranqiull. It shows what the average family in the early 1900’s looked like, big and they stuck together. The picture also makes me feel like most families, today, don’t spend quality time, work together, or talk together like they did back then. This picture makes me want to spend more time with my family. This is a great picture. 1)Do you enjoy working together in the fields and the house as a family? 2)At times, can it be hard to cooperate as a family?

Even Walker- Summer of 1963. -This picture was taken during the afternoon, outdoors, on a sunny day in urban Greensboro, Alabama.
-There is an African American man in his twentys pushing an old truck down the road. He is dressed in all white and has on a cap as well. The first thing that caught my eye was that the man was pushing his car instead of driving it.
-There are neat, clean buisnesses side by side in the background while cars are on the road.
-The tone in this is heavy, negative, and light.
My response to this photo is that i think the man in white is pushing his car because he ran out of gas and has to get home. He may have lost his job because of the depression so he can not afford to buy gas so he can get back home but he wants to keep his car so his only choice is to push it home. It is a nice sunny day out in Greesboro, Alabama.
QUESTIONS;
The first question i would ask is why is the man in white pushing his car instead of driving it?
Second i would ask the photagrapher what made them take this photo, what about this scence intrested them?

-There are two people in this, an African American man and women, both seem to be in there early thirtys. The women is wearing a white blouse and skirt while the man has on a hat, button down shirt and pants. What first caught my eye is that the women has a large box balanced on her head and the man was sitting on the frame of a wooden wagon.
-There are no buildings in the picture only an open feild with occasional trees along a dirt road.
-The tone is heavy, negative, and dark.
My response to this picture was that these people must be farmers and she is carrying the crops and water back to the house. While her husband is trying to fix their wagon the animals pull to help them in the feilds. This is all taking place in a large feild in Greenboro, Alabama during the day.QUESTIONS;The first question i would ask is to the woman, and that would be what is in the box you have on your head, and what is in the bucket in your hand?Second i would ask the man what he is doing with the wagon, and what it is used for?

-This photo was taken in the afternoon on a sunny day in urban Selma, Alamaba.
-There are four African American men in this picture wearing dress pants and collard shirts with ties and a hat on their head. One man in the door is wearing pants a shirt and an apron. The first thing that caught my eye is the coca-cola sign hanging over the shop.
-There is a general store in this picture that is cleaned up and tidy outside. There are stools with men sitting outside and also a canopy over the door.
-The tone is light, negative, and dark.
My response to this picture is that the men in buisness suits lost their jobs because of the depression and have no where else to go so they sit and talk outside the general store. The man in the apron is probably the shop keeper or owner of the store. This was taken in Selma, Alabama on a sunny day during the depression.
QUESTIONS;
The first question i would ask is to the men in suits and that would be why are you sitting out, do you still have a job to go to?
Second i would ask the shop keeper how the depression was affecting them and if buisness was still good?

The setting is at Craig Field army quarters in Selma, Alabama. This was taken outside and during the day. The quarters are located in a rural area. In the photograph, there are no people but a barren space for the airfield, some buildings, and a few cars. Nothing immediately catches my eye because the space is so bare. The buildings are barracks for military personnel and are in good condition. They all surround the airfield in the middle. The tone of this photograph is dry because there is not much in the picture. There is nothing that catches my eye because there are only 2 cars and some military housing. This picture reflects what was going on during this time. The year it was taken was 1941 before America was in war. This shows how unprepared America was for a surprise attack. At this airfield, you cannot even see planes or servicemen. The picture is very barren suggesting that America would be heavily tested militarily. 1) What provoked you to take this photograph? 2) What was your motivation for this picture?

The setting of this photograph is the segregated African American section of the town of Eutlaw. It is during the day time and it was a rural area. There is a woman and her child sitting in front of there house. There clothing does not look fancy so I do not think they have much money. The first thing that catches my eye is the battered and dilapidated housing in the African American section of town. The homes are in an orderly fashion and have decent spacing between them. On the other side of the road it looks like there is farmland or an open field. The tone of the paragraph is dark because the people in the paragraph look poor and not happy. My response to this photograph is sadness because many families had a similar situation. Many African American families were segregated to poorer sections of town and were left with almost nothing. They had to live in broken down houses and even kids had to work to pay for living and food. It is a shame that these people were treated like this considering how much they have gone through in previous years.
